Telangana's Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has instructed NVS Reddy, the Managing Director of Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMRL), to suspend the Airport Metro rail alignment between Raidurg and RGI Airport at Shamshabad via the Outer Ring Road.
Highlighting the urgency for alternative alignments from MGBS-Falaknuma and LB Nagar via Chandrayangutta, the Chief Minister has scrutinized the Rs 6,250 crore Airport Metro project, comprising 10 stations, for a potential route change.
In a comprehensive review of Hyderabad Metro Rail, its expansion plans, and the Airport Metro project, CM Revanth Reddy urged the HMRL MD to explore cost-effective alternatives. Suggested routes include paths through Mailardevpally, Jalpally, and P7 Road or Barkas-Pahadeshareef and Srisailam Road. The CM emphasized that a direct alignment might cut costs by traversing open government-owned areas within the airport premises.
Expressing discontent over the benefits given to Metro rail concessionaire L&TMRHL, mainly due to the incomplete 5.5-kilometer stretch in the Old City, CM Revanth Reddy called for a thorough investigation into this matter. He stressed the importance of scrutinizing the concession agreements of L&TMRHL, GMR Airport, and the supplementary concession agreements of Metro Rail to safeguard government interests.
Adopting a balanced approach, the CM instructed senior officers to devise a city master plan. He questioned the reasoning behind fixing the Airport Metro alignment along the Outer Ring Road in the GO 111 area, where development prospects were restricted.
Given that a significant population resides in the city's central, eastern, and old cities, CM Revanth Reddy emphasized prioritizing an Airport Metro alignment through the old city to enhance accessibility and connectivity.
