After a hiatus of over a year, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has initiated efforts to enclose the Khajaguda rock formation. However, rather than fencing the entire perimeter to safeguard the rock formation, the focus is on securing the road leading to the temple, alongside another pathway to the Dargah of Baba Fakruddin and the cave of Avatar Meher Baba. The southern approach road also features a gate and partial fencing.
Ritwik Reddy, a representative of Save Khajaguda Rocks who has been collaborating with HMDA officials on this project, explained, "The gate has been installed by the three religious bodies that share space on the upper part of the hillock. The area used to be frequented by individuals who would come to engage in revelry, consume alcohol, and litter the surroundings. They would drive right up to the edge of the rock formation."
Mr. Reddy emphasized, "Fencing the entire perimeter is crucial. Cordoning off the road will restrict access to trekkers and those who come to admire the rock formations."
Frauke Quader of the Society to Save Rocks emphasized, "Fencing the entire periphery is the only effective means of protecting the rocks. The government should take a resolute stance and implement it. Fencing the path is merely a cosmetic measure and serves no real purpose."
Ritwik Reddy pointed out, "Previous attempts to fence the entire perimeter were abandoned due to resistance and legal challenges from property owners. The only area where they succeeded is a section near the dargah, as evident by a barbed-wire fence on the edge of a rock on the southern side."
As of now, officials from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority have not provided any comments on this recent development.
