Telangana HC Questioned Government on Constructions near Khajaguda Lake

Hyderabad: On July 30, the Telangana High Court ordered that constructions wouldn't be allowed within the Full Tank Level (FTL) of Khajaguda lake. It also added that the Government must be able to inform the bench whether any Lake Protection Committee (LPC) was constituted to protect lakes in Rangareddy district by August 17.

Chief Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan and Justice B Vijaysen Reddy stated that as there were major coordination issues among departments like irrigation, revenue, and GHMC, the Government was indirectly jeopardizing the lives of people apart from destroying the lakes.

The encroachers were taking advantage of the coordination problems among the departments.  As a solution to this problem, the bench asked the Government to include police in their committee and form a permanent LPC.

A PIL was filed by social activist Lubna Sarwath, bringing the court's notice regarding the illegal construction activity carried out by the authorities within the Khajaguda lake area. The PIL also stated that the Government must stop any intervention with the lake henceforth.

Amicus curiae MV Pratap Kumar informed the bench that as per HMDA, there were two versions about the actual extent of Khajaguda lake. The bench comprising Chief Justice Raghvendra Singh Chauhan and Justice B Vijaysen Reddy had earlier directed HMDA to provide all the proofs of the three maps that were showing different extents of the lake.

The judges questioned the Government about the steps they took to preserve the lakes and punish the encroachers in Rangareddy. They also sought to know from the Government what concrete steps were taken to protect the lakes or expel the encroachers in Rangareddy.
