Just like SDLC, housing too consists similar phases. Vaguely called HDLC (House Development Life Cycle), the process includes gathering requirements, analyzing, developing, testing, and delivery. Support and maintenance is a boon that comes with.

Coming to the point, if you want an ideal house, it is necessary to specify the details first. Sit down and make a list of all your requirements of a house. This includes whether you want the wood deck or a concrete stamped patio, hardwood floors or concrete stain, the number of bedrooms you realistically need etc. In a way, you need to freeze out the requirements in this phase.

Where do you want to go to those built-in shelves? What about the exterior of your home? Do you want a brick?  Stone? Remember, once you put it in writing, it will be much more to reality. It will be harder to change your mind!

Then find a contractor who will then analyze your requirements and confirm the feasibilities. It is better to go for a contractor who is specialized in personalization. Once you get a green signal from the contractor, you can then go to a competent builder.

"As the going gets tough, the tough get going" goes the famous saying. Such-like once we are done with the initial two phases, you can unburden your responsibility to some extent.

However, as discussed in the above paragraph, roping a right builder in is the best bet here. Remember that the connoisseur and mastery come with experience.
