Drip Irrigation System to be installed on ORR

The 158-kilometre-long ORR (Outer Ring Road) is all set to get a brand new drip irrigation system, which will not only make the process of watering plants easier but will also save both time and money, said officials of the Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL) to the media.

A New System in Place

The drip irrigation system will be installed along the median and the avenue of the ORR. In addition to this measure, the HGCL will also undertake a large scale plantation drive along the expressway, said officials privy to the matter.

Presently the saplings along the ORR are being watered manually, resulting in inefficient use of water and its wastage. HGCL currently spends nearly Rs 30 crore to water all the saplings along the ORR with the help of slow-moving tankers, which, apart from being inefficient, have also been responsible for several accidents along the expressway.

Advantages of Drip Irrigation System

The drip irrigation system will be set up along three rows of the median and three rows on the two shoulders, thereby totalling nine rows. Additionally, normal watering systems will also be set up along all the interchanges. According to Arvind Kumar, principal secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development, the new drip irrigation system is expected to save the government Rs 37 crore in seven years. Not just that, the entire system will run on an automated platform, thereby promptly detecting any possible leakages and shutting off the system entirely. The total estimated cost of the projected is Rs 47 crore and will be installed in five packages and implanted in three months.

This is not the only green initiative that Hyderabad’s civic authorities have taken.
