GHMC Received Rs 298 Crore Fund for Drain Works in Hyderabad

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is gearing up to undertake a large-scale repair of drains in Hyderabad.

Government Special Fund Sanctioned for Canal Works

At a recent review meeting of MA&UD Minister KT Rama Rao has directed the GHMC to start capping and repair works on open nalas to avoid untoward incidents in rainy seasons and also directed to come up with an action plan in order to complete the works in time.

After the review meeting, DS Lokesh Kumar, the GHMC Commissioner, submitted an application for nearly 472 stormwater drains in Hyderabad at Rs 298.34 crore for repair or covering. The Commissioner had asked the State Government to issue administrative sanctions in light of the stringent financial condition of the GHMC by allocating special funds to the civic authority.

The government granted the administrative sanction, a sum of Rs 298.34 crore to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for taking 472 drainage projects in Hyderabad. 

The works will include laying of covers with 2 meters width on the top of nalas, construct retaining walls to nalas having over 2-meter width apart from installation of iron mesh at the residential areas etc. At least 382 nalas have less than 2-metre widths in the city, for which Rs 233 crores are required, while Rs 65.32 crores are needed for 90 nalas that are more than 2 metres wide.
