Hyderabad ahead of other cities in sewage treatment: KTR

KTR (Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao) Telangana's Minister for Municipal Administration quoted Hyderabad as having better sewage treatment than other major cities in India. KTR  highlighted the laying of the foundation for developing 17 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) with a capacity of 376.5 million liters per day (MLD) at Rs 1,280 crore as a major move forward for Hyderabad in sewage treatment.

The STPs would improve  Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board's (HMWSSB) total sewage treatment capacity to 1148.5 MLD.  KTR states that of the 1,950 MLD of wastewater generated in the city, 772 MLD 4,444 are currently being treated. With the construction of 17 new STPs in the areas of Kukatpally, Quthbullapur, and Serilingampally circles, more wastewater of 376.5 MLD can be treated.

The city of Hyderabad will then build 14 new STPs, reaching the count of 31 new STPs to be gradually developed.it will indeed be an important milestone in Hyderabad's development into a global city. Further KTR  pointed out that the wastewater currently produced in the city flows into the Musi River under the action of gravity. He warned that if this sewer is not dealt with, there will be public health problems. The construction of STPs will help prevent sewage from flowing into the lakes and tanks and so the water bodies will be maintained well and beautified with cleaner surroundings.

For the first time in 14 years, STP has developed on a large scale. He said that 94% of the 772 MLD wastewater has been treated. With 14 additional STPs, sewage treatment capacity will be further improved. Hundreds of thousands of people move to the city each year, and he said the government is taking steps to develop infrastructure to meet their needs.
