PMAY-Urban Housing Constructions to Provide Approx 3.65 Cr Employment

In the mid of 2015, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana scheme was initiated, the primary goal of PMAY-U is to provide affordable housing for economically poor members and on the other hand, indirectly it is also providing a large number of jobs for building houses sanctioned by Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban in the country.

Generation of Jobs Through PMAY Urban Scheme

On 18 August, addressing a conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that around 3.65 crore jobs would be generated in the construction of PMAY-U houses and so far, 1.65 crore jobs have already been generated. The Ministry approved 1.07 Crore Houses against the demand of 1.12 Crore, among which 67 lakh houses were grounded and 35 have been delivered up till now. 

In the Atma Nirbhar Bharat conference, Promoting Use of Steel in the Housing & Construction and Aviation sector,  it was projected that 158 lakh metric tons of steel and 692 lakh metric tons of cement can be used in the construction of the PMAY-U approved houses.

Developed Infrastructure Facilities

The Metro network of about 700 kilometres currently operates in 18 cities, and nearly 900 km network is under construction in 27 cities. In Delhi-NCR, 378 km of Metro network is operational, which would be extended by another 146 km which include 82 km Delhi-Meerut RRTS network.

He stated that 40% or 600 million Indians in the country are expected to live in urban areas by 2030, adding that India has to develop 600 to 800 million meters of urban space every year by 2030 to cater for its increasing urban population.
