Deep inside the Nizam's Kingdom, the British found safety at the Residency at Bolarum. The colonial enclave, which was guarded by an entrenchment and was surrounded by battalions of elite soldiers, was a place where the Resident might flee if he sensed a threat.
The Indian Tricolour was also ceremonially flown here on September 17, 1948, following Nizam's army's submission to the Indian forces. One of the three presidential retreats in the nation, Rashtrapati Nilayam, is now available to guests for a cost of $50. Earlier, it used to be accessible to tourists for a few days each year.

On the exterior, the one-story colonial structure is unimpressive, painted a stark white, and is shaded by a large maulsary (Mimusops elengi) tree, but the insides are breathtaking. The 163-foot tunnel that joins the kitchen and dining space, lighted by skylights, is one of the building's most unique features. It is presently decorated with Cherian art.
