Civic Body to Construct 10,000 Public Toilets in Hyderabad

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to take over maintenance of public toilets in the State's capital from private agencies. The GHMC officials wanted to involve private entities to this end by making maintenance a crucial consideration for the widespread usage of public toilets.

The GHMC plans to build 10,000 toilets within its limits by October 2, 2020. In addition to 3,000 toilets previously planned by the municipal corporation, the government has ordered GHMC to build 7,000 additional toilets. There are currently over 7800 public toilets in different areas in Hyderabad and the rest of the toilets will be completed as per the time period.

With maintainability at its core, GHMC decided to seamlessly maintain the properties and services of private agencies. The agencies maintain the installations and must clean the toilets at prescribed times five times a day. He said that the municipal company would pay for its services.

The municipal corporation reports that the annual maintenance of toilets will cost approximately Rs 23 Crore. It is the biggest drive-in public toilets anywhere in the country, and by far, GHMC officials said Hyderabad would be the only town with over 10,000 government toilets.

Of the 10,000 toilets, approximately 1,900 are built by BOT (build-operate-transfers), while the rest are clustered. Every cluster will have around 5, and 10 units and tenders for the project are already floated. It is also carried out in other areas, on the basis of the bids.

The government public toilets construction drive would lay emphasis on enhancing the quality lives of urban citizens.
