GHMC Taking Up Strategic Nala Development Works in Hyderabad

The State Government has set up the Strategic Nala Development Plan (SNDP), an exclusive wing for the execution of related works in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), as part of its long-term plans to prevent flooding and Nala development in the city.

Strategic Nala Development Plans

KT Rama Rao, Minister of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, said on Monday that the SNDP was set up specifically to deal with all issues related to urban nalas and to alleviate adversity in the future due to heavy rains.

The SNDP will mainly research and operate in the city to build nalas and stormwater drains. Comprehensive stormwater drainage or the Nala system in the city will be planned, built and maintained. The SNDP will recognise vital narrow points, Nala intrusions, research trunk mains, feeder nalas, and other aspects under this initiative and send reports to take up work in a task mode. Actions will be begun accordingly.

Last month, the city received heavy rainfall, resulting in many low lying areas and residential colonies being flooded. The free flow of water was stopped by the narrowing of nalas and stormwater drains over the years, among other factors.

The move to create the SNDP follows the implementation of the Strategic Road Development Program (SRDP) and the development of road infrastructure in various areas across the city to ease traffic congestion. The idea is to replicate the move and produce excellent results. The wing would include officials from the local, public health and waterworks departments.
