State Govt Starts Setting Up Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants in 71 ULBs

The state government has started the development of Faecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs) at 71 ULBs (urban local bodies), thereby giving a boost to waste management in Telangana.

Plans for Waste Management in Telangana

Commissioner and Director of N. Satyanarayana Municipal Administration stated that the government had already built over 8,900 public toilets across the nation, and now the focus is on handling and processing the waste scientifically as septage is much more polluting than domestic waste.

Telangana is the first state to adopt the need for an interruptive and safe sanitation solution through managing faecal sludge and septage — stated government officials, adding that it has begun setting up FSTPs with an installed total capacity to manage 1.565 km per day.

Working order has already been issued on the basis of geographical proximity and other operating criteria in 71 ULBs clustered under 7 packages of FSTP. Each cluster consists of 10 to 11 ULBs. The project cost for setting up FSTPs in the 71 ULBs — including capital and operational expenditure for ten years — works out to Rs 250.68 crore.

In the 68 newly established ULBs, the state government granted the administrative sanction Rs 26 crore for establishing FSTPs. Detailed reporting of projects, designs and BoQs have already been prepared and tenders are scheduled for execution.
