Jawaharnagar Dump Yard is All Set to Have Waste to Energy Conversion Plant

19.8 MW waste to energy plant will be the outcome of the persistent efforts by GHMC to commission this plant formally. It should be considered a significant move in regards to waste management and energy regeneration.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is all set to unveil the much-anticipated outcome of their determined efforts to formally commission the 19.8 MW waste to energy plant. This plant will find its place at Jawaharnagar dump yard shortly. Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT R participation is anticipated in the event.

For most of the capping works, 130 acres in the dump yard are already reserved, and the remainder of the space shall be used for dumping and processing freshly brought waste. Once the segregation of the waste is done, compost is being generated besides RDF (Refuse derived fuel), generated from the 40% waste, including municipal solid waste. 20% of it goes to the scientific landfill and generating compost.

As per the State governments order, the installation of 1200 tonne per day (TPD) or 19.8 MW Waste to the energy plant has been approved by Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB). The phase2 is likely to be expanded by increasing the capacity by 1200 TPD. This project consists of two boilers, each of 600 TPD Capacity, and will display the capacity to generate 19.8 MW initially. The plant is synchronized with the grid on the 20th of August, 2020, with a 50% utilization capacity operating on one boiler.

Once the installation is performed for the second boiler already, the total capacity is met. This facility also makes the optimal use of an air-cooled condenser to conserve water and use air as a medium for its cooling purposes. Malkaram substation is used to connect the power, which is near the Jawaharnagar Site. Until November, about 13.44 million energy units were generated utilizing nearly 53,000 tonnes of waste, stated by a GHMC official. These boilers have been extracted from China with a technology that reciprocates from Belgium.

The municipal corporation will execute the waste to energy project in association with Ramky Enviro.

Ramky Enviro's Joint Managing Director, Masood Mallick, also stated on the occasion of the anticipated launch how proud they have been of this waste to energy conversion plant, which is soon to be set up in Jawaharnagar. It is also going to be South India's first-ever energy plant.

The first phase will witness 19.8 MW of energy per day, followed by 28 MW in its second phase. Apart from that, this plant will play a pivotal role in treating the city's waste to world-class standards and acts as a critical source to cater to the city's green energy requirements.
