Telangana Plans to Take Up a New Irrigation Schemes Survey

After the Stated Cabinet's decision to conduct surveys for various irrigation projects on the Krishna River throughout the state, the Telangana government issued orders to conduct detailed investigations into irrigation schemes to supplement existing and ongoing projects in the Krishna Basin and to protect the interests of Telangana residents in the former districts of Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar.

Government Survey on New Irrigation Schemes

As per the Government Order, the survey will include the construction of the Jogulamba barrage on the foreshore of Srisailam Reservoir on the Krishna River before the confluence with the Tungabhadra River to store about 35 to 40 TMC within the river boundaries, as well as the Bhima flood flow canal from the confluence point of the Krishna with the Bhima near Kusumarthy village in Narayanpet district to dive about 35 to 40 TMC within the river boundaries.

A survey will also be conducted to lift water from the Sunkesula barrage's foreshore to service around two lakh acres of irrigable tail end lands in Alampur and Gadwal, as well as left-over territories under the RDS and Jawahar Nettempadu Lift Irrigation Scheme.

Construction of new and improved storage under the Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme to store about 20 TMC, as well as a lift scheme from the foreshore of the Pulichintala dam to irrigate upland areas of the former Nalgonda district to serve about two lakh acres, including the NSLC ayacut, will be covered.

A lift scheme from the Nagarjuna Sagar project's tail pond will be investigated to serve a gap ayacut of one lakh acres under the project's tail end and upland areas.

Rajat Kumar, Special Chief Secretary to the Government, Engineer-in-Chief (General) Hyderabad stated that they will immediately begin a full examination into all of the plans.
